Habits of Healthy People

By Amanda Lorbiecki, Personal Trainer

Do you ever wonder what the “healthy people” do to stay healthy? How come they make it look so easy? Do they follow certain habits? I’m sure a lot of people who are trying to change their life for the better have these exact same questions in mind.

The good news is, I have some healthy habits to share with you! The number one habit that I stick to is making sure I’m having breakfast. Eating breakfast in the morning is going to boost your metabolism, and it helps you from overeating later on in the day. When you eat breakfast, your body is going to be in an anabolic state, which means you are building and maintaining your muscle mass. This doesn’t mean you have to have a buffet for breakfast every morning. You can make it small, just don’t skip it!

The number two habit I stick to is planning my meals. Planning my meals before the week starts helps me save time! Meal planning keeps me in control of what and how much I am eating. For example, my meal prep days are on Sundays. I will usually make some sort of carb (rice, sweet potatoes), protein (chicken, tuna, ground turkey), and a vegetable for the week. The third habit that I stick to is making sure I drink plenty of water. I notice the more water I drink throughout the day, the less I crave food when I know I shouldn’t be! Especially when you start to add exercise into your routine, you always want to make sure you are hydrated.

The fourth habit is making sure I get enough sleep. Getting enough sleep will help boost your mood and increase your memory and focus. It’s ideal to get 8 hours of sleep a night. Making this a long term habit will also help decrease the risk of heart disease. Lastly, make sure you add strength training into your exercise routine. Strength training helps you decrease your body fat percentage and, of course, increase your muscle mass. The more muscle mass the better! The more muscle you have, the more calories you will be burning throughout the day.

To make it clear, these habits will not automatically make you lose weight. However, it will lead you on the right path. It takes time to see progress; that doesn’t mean you should quit right away. Be patient, follow these healthy habits, and of course, listen to your body.
