We have all said “that won’t happen to me “. For many things you’re probably right, but some things are more common than we think and thinking it will not happen to you can be a big mistake, like falling at home. This is a potentially life-changing event. Whether it causes broken bones, or concussion…Or psychological damage through losing your confidence, being scared to keep active, and ending up isolated. Falls in the home are one of the biggest risks to elderly people with 1 in 3 over 65s falling AT LEAST once EVERY YEAR…And the number rockets to 1 in 2 for the over 80s.
Many people notice they are not as stable on their feet as they used to be and are worried about falling. While falling does not always cause an injury, a fall can certainly wreck your confidence and spark concerns about losing your independence and lead you to avoid certain activities contributing to isolation.
A fall is also more likely to happen if:
-
Floors are wet or recently polished
-
There is poor lighting in the room
-
Rugs or carpets are loose, and not properly secured
-
You reach above head height (such as getting something from a cupboard)
-
You are walking down stairs
-
You are rushing (when answering the door, or going to the toilet)
-
You have been drinking alcohol (which affects coordination and can exaggerate the effects of some medicines
There are some easy, and practical things that you can do to prevent falls at home, such as:
-
Using non-slip mats in the bathroom
-
Clean up spillages to prevent wet, slippery floors
-
Make sure all rooms, passages and staircases are well lit
-
Remove clutter, trailing wires and loose rugs or carpets
-
Don’t lift or move heavy or cumbersome items alone
-
Don’t wear loose fitting clothes that you could trip you up
-
Wear shoe or slippers that are in good condition and have good grip
-
Organize your home so you minimize the need to stretch, bend or reach for items (for example – avoid putting heavier items above head height or below hip height)
-
Install grab bars on both sides of toilets, bathtubs, shower, staircases and wherever else you need them
-
Fix any injuries that affect your coordination and work on your strength and balance. If you have any issues with your feet, ankles, knees, hips and low back it can affect your balance and increase risk of falls
Bottom line is that keeping yourself active will help maintain your flexibility and strength to help prevent falls.
